Congressman Troy A. Carter, who represents Louisiana’s 2nd District and has served in the U.S. Congress since 2021, has taken to social media to express his views on several pertinent issues.
On May 2, 2025, Congressman Carter addressed budgetary concerns by stating that, “‘waste, fraud, and abuse’ won’t save $880B. They want to cut seniors, veterans, kids — all while protecting billionaires’ tax breaks. I’m standing on the side of the people.” Congressman Carter emphasized his stance on prioritizing the needs of vulnerable groups like seniors, veterans, and children over maintaining tax breaks for billionaires.
In another post made the same day, Carter remarked on the significance of free speech. He stated, “Free speech isn’t just for what’s popular — it’s the right to challenge power. The First Amendment protects dissent, protest, and the freedom to call out government overreach. You don’t have to like it. You just have to defend it.” Through this tweet, Carter highlighted the essential nature of the First Amendment in safeguarding diverse expressions and holding the government accountable.
Finally, Congressman Carter raised concerns about funding for mental health, especially in light of recent administrative decisions. He tweeted, “As we begin #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, the Musk-Trump administration is cutting mental health funding that we approved in Congress after the 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting—funding that provided critical support to students throughout the nation.” Carter expressed his disapproval of the funding cuts, particularly noting their impact on mental health initiatives that were reinforced following the Robb Elementary School shooting in 2022.
Troy Carter was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1963 and continues to reside there. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Xavier University of Louisiana and previously served in both the Louisiana House of Representatives and the Louisiana Senate before his current role in Congress.
