During the first quarter of 2026, Chateau DE Notre Dame Community Care Center was the second largest nursing facility in Orleans County, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

The facility provided 171 beds—36 more than the average for nursing homes in Orleans County in the same quarter. It served an average of 153.3 residents over the three-month span.

The CMS assigned Chateau DE Notre Dame Community Care Center an overall rating of 2 out of 5, lower than Louisiana’s average rating of 2.5 for nursing homes.

For the quarter, Ferncrest Manor Living Center was the largest nursing home in the county, offering 200 beds, while Lafon Nursing Facility of the Holy Family ranked third with 155 beds.

As of the first quarter of 2026, Chateau DE Notre Dame Community Care Center incurred no fines or penalties.

Seven non-profit nursing homes operated in Orleans County, Louisiana, during the period.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates show that growth of the nation’s older adult population continues, while numbers in younger age brackets are declining. Between 2020 and 2024, the population of those age 65 and older rose 13%, and the number of children under 18 dropped 1.7%. The U.S. older adult population has grown notably over the past 100 years, climbing from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 analysis found that almost half of Americans in that demographic, or roughly 28 million, may need long-term services and supports, with over a third likely to require nursing home care eventually.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
