NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans and Tulane University today announced the expansion of the Mayoral Scholarship Program. As part of its ongoing commitment to support the academic success of local top students while encouraging them to remain in New Orleans to access a transformative college education, Tulane University is doubling the number of available full tuition scholarships. The expansion of the available awards from five to ten was approved by the New Orleans City Council last week.
Since 1880, the City of New Orleans has partnered with Tulane University to select one student from each City Council District to receive a fully funded four-year scholarship to the university. Mayoral Scholarships are fully funded by Tulane University.
“Increasing the number of our Mayoral Scholars is one of several Tulane initiatives designed to keep more of the best and brightest Louisiana students right here at home,” said Tulane University President Michael A. Fitts. “We want to ensure that cost is never a barrier to keeping any qualified student from receiving a Tulane education, especially the children of our local families.”
Mayoral Scholarships are four-year, full-tuition awards provided to Orleans Parish residents who are graduates of New Orleans high schools and meet certain additional eligibility requirements for undergraduate attendance in the university’s Newcomb-Tulane College. The scholarships are awarded to incoming first-year students based on academic merit. Recipients must have a strong academic record, proven by quality and difficulty of high school coursework and standardized scores. In addition, recipients must have established financial need as determined by federal guidelines, have participated in extracurricular activities or community service, demonstrated leadership ability and obtained letters of recommendation from a high school guidance counselor, a principal or headmaster.
Increasing the number of Mayoral Scholarships is just one of many Tulane initiatives designed to enroll more students from New Orleans and throughout Louisiana. This commitment includes the popular and successful Louisiana Promise program, which meets the full financial need for in-state students without utilizing loans, with families’ incomes of less than $100,000 annually.
