Former Tulane catcher Colin Tuft was named to the Baltimore Orioles’ Spring Breakout roster and will participate in the Major League Baseball Spring Breakout games this week, according to a Mar. 19 announcement from the organization.
The MLB Spring Breakout is an annual event that highlights top baseball prospects as they compete in exhibition games. This year’s event runs from March 19-22 and features 16 games over four days. In the previous year, 68 of MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Prospects were included on participating rosters.
Tuft and the Orioles are scheduled to play against the Boston Red Sox on March 20 at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Florida. The game will begin at 5:05 p.m. Central Time and can be viewed on MASN, MLB.com, MLB.TV, and the MLB app.
Tuft was selected by the Orioles in the eighth round (249th overall) of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft. During his time at Tulane, he led his team in several categories during the 2024 season, including runs scored (67), walks (44), and stolen bases (13). He also posted a .279 batting average with 62 hits, 11 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs, and a .509 slugging percentage.
He is only the eighth Tulane player ever drafted by Baltimore and joins a list that includes Joey Pursell (1980), Sam Amarena (1987), Todd Dyess (1994), Robbie Conway (1994), Hudson Haskin (2020), Collin Burns (2021), and Keagan Gillies (2021). Tuft is also one of two former Tulane players selected for this year’s Spring Breakout games; pitcher Michael Lombardi will participate with the Kansas City Royals.
The inclusion of former college athletes like Tuft in events such as Spring Breakout reflects ongoing efforts by Major League Baseball teams to showcase emerging talent.
