Congressman Troy A. Carter, who represents Louisiana’s 2nd district in the U.S. Congress, recently addressed mental health support, diversity and inclusion in the federal workforce, and firearm suicide prevention in a series of posts on his social media account.
On September 8, 2025, Carter highlighted the importance of mental health care access by stating: “On #988Day, we recommit to reducing the stigma around seeking mental health support and to ensuring compassionate care is available anytime, for anyone in need. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 for help. You are not alone. @988lifeline https://t.co/HH0XCsWxld”
Later that day, he criticized proposed cuts to diversity programs within the federal workforce: “We know what Trump really means when he says he wants to get rid of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. His reckless federal workforce cuts aren’t about efficiency, they’re about erasing progress. Black women are being hit the hardest and losing opportunities they’ve worked” (September 8, 2025).
Addressing gun violence on September 9, 2025, Carter wrote: “Every day, 74 Americans die by firearm suicide. Today, I’m joining @bradybuzz in recognizing #FirearmSuicidePreventionDay. More than half of all gun deaths in America are suicides, but by working together to promote safe gun storage, we can save lives. @HouseGVP https://t.co/RFH2U9pwnr”
Carter has served as a member of Congress since replacing Cedric Richmond in 2021 and previously held seats in both chambers of the Louisiana state legislature. Born in New Orleans in 1963 and a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana with a BA earned in 1986, Carter has maintained residence in New Orleans throughout his career.
