Congressman Troy A. Carter, who represents Louisiana’s 2nd district in the U.S. Congress, addressed recent incidents and commemorations in a series of posts on social media between December 14 and 15, 2025.
On December 14, Carter responded to news of violence at an academic institution by stating, “I am heartbroken to hear of the shooting at Brown University. No one should lose their loved one in such a horrific way in the place they are supposed to learn and grow. My prayers are with Providence and the entire Brown University community.”
Later that day, he commented on events abroad, writing, “What we witnessed in Australia today was horrific—an act of hate that must be condemned. Antisemitism is real, growing, and has no place in Louisiana, America, or anywhere in the world. As we light the Hanukkah menorah, we do so with resolve. Even in dark moments, light endures.” This statement came as Jewish communities worldwide began observing Hanukkah.
In a subsequent post on December 15 marking the holiday’s start, Carter added: “Tonight marks the first night of Hanukkah. May these next eight nights be filled with peace, light, and joy. Happy Hanukkah!”
Carter has represented Louisiana’s 2nd District since winning a special election in 2021 after Cedric Richmond vacated the seat. Before his tenure in Congress, he served both in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1992 to 1994 and later on the Louisiana Senate from 2016 to 2021. Born and residing in New Orleans since his birth in 1963, Carter graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986.
