District A Councilmember Aimee McCarron announced on April 29 that she will host a “Light the Night” community walk in the Hollygrove-Dixon neighborhood on Thursday, April 30. The event aims to identify streetlights that have been out for an extended period and highlight areas where additional lighting could improve public safety and visibility.
The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to address streetlight infrastructure issues across New Orleans. It aligns with citywide goals shared by Mayor Helena Moreno’s administration to enhance safety, responsiveness, and quality of life for residents. During the event, participants will have an opportunity to engage directly with city officials, observe local conditions firsthand, and discuss coordinated strategies for improving streetlight maintenance or expanding coverage as needed. City officials and community leaders are expected to attend.
McCarron’s first Light the Night event in Hollygrove cataloged nearly 30 infrastructure problems ranging from broken utility poles to damaged sidewalks. These issues were reported to relevant departments, with many already repaired. The councilmember’s office continues to follow up on outstanding repairs.
The upcoming walk is scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 PM at the New Orleans Job Corps Center located at 8825 Airline Highway. Residents are encouraged to bring flashlights as they join efforts “to shine a light on this important issue for Hollygrove-Dixon and communities across the city,” according to McCarron’s office.
Broader implications of this initiative include increased collaboration between local government and residents in addressing infrastructure concerns that affect daily life and neighborhood safety.
