Councilmember Eugene Green welcomed a favorable recommendation from the City Planning Commission on Mar. 24 for zoning changes needed to advance the 9th Ward Stadium project in New Orleans.

The recommendation, which approved Zoning Docket 032/26, supports a zoning change for the site at 4290 Almonaster Avenue and 3059 Higgins Boulevard. This would allow for a Regional Open Space designation and grant conditional use approval for a stadium. The proposed facility is planned near George Washington Carver High School and is intended to serve both student athletics and community events across the city.

“Today’s action keeps this important project moving forward,” Councilmember Green said. “The 9th Ward Stadium represents a long-overdue investment in our students and in a community that deserves quality infrastructure and opportunity.”

The next step will be consideration by the City Council, which has final authority over the matter. “This is about delivering real progress for the Ninth Ward,” Green said. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to bring this project across the finish line.”

If approved by the council, construction of the multi-use stadium would mark another significant development for residents of New Orleans’ Upper Ninth Ward.
