New Orleans City Council Budget Committee Chair Lesli Harris announced on March 11 that the City of New Orleans will receive $5 million in cash reserves from the Municipal and Traffic Court of New Orleans. The transfer follows a partnership between the City Council and the court, led by Judge Bobby Jones.

The additional funds are expected to help the city address ongoing fiscal challenges while maintaining essential services for residents. This move comes as city leaders continue to look for ways to strengthen financial stability amid budget constraints.

Harris worked with council fiscal staff and Judge Jones to identify available cash reserves and facilitate their return to the city’s budget. “At a time when we are carefully evaluating every dollar in the City’s budget, securing these funds is an important step in strengthening our financial position,” said Councilmember Lesli Harris, Chair of the City Council’s Budget Committee. “I’ve said repeatedly that the City needs to shake every couch cushion we can find to make sure we are using our resources responsibly. This is a perfect example of that approach, working collaboratively to identify funds that can be returned to the City and put to work for our residents.”

The $5 million will support broader financial planning efforts and help maintain services relied upon by residents. As Budget Chair, Harris has focused on improving financial oversight, identifying resources, and ensuring that New Orleans can meet its current budget challenges while continuing investments across neighborhoods.

City officials say this collaborative effort demonstrates their commitment to responsible resource management as they plan for future needs.
