Tulane University announced on May 22 that Alyssa Dismuke and Kameron Hamilton have been named recipients of the 2026 Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award by the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals.
The award honors student-athletes who have overcome significant personal, academic, or emotional challenges to achieve academic success while competing in intercollegiate athletics. The recognition highlights perseverance, determination, and resilience among college athletes.
“Each of these student-athletes represents the true spirit of the Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award,” said Liz Fuqua, N4A President. “Their stories are powerful reminders that resilience, perseverance, and courage extend far beyond competition. Despite facing significant personal, physical, and emotional challenges, they continued to pursue excellence academically, athletically, and personally. We are proud to recognize these extraordinary individuals and celebrate the impact they have on their campuses, teammates, and communities.”
Dismuke joined Tulane’s women’s track and field team in Fall 2022 after overcoming a difficult upbringing marked by abuse and depression. She faced further setbacks in college with family loss and a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis but found support through Tulane’s Behavioral Health unit and leadership roles within the department. Dismuke plans to continue her education into law school for a career in medical malpractice.
Hamilton completed his football career at Tulane as a defensive lineman while navigating challenges as a hard-of-hearing student-athlete in an unfamiliar environment. He dealt with coaching changes, injuries requiring rehabilitation each year, loss of teammates who transferred away from Tulane, as well as personal tragedy when an uncle was killed in 2024. Despite these obstacles he graduated in December 2025 with plans to establish a foundation for youth with disabilities and become a mental health counselor.
“We are incredibly proud of Alyssa and Kameron for their resilience, perseverance, and outstanding achievements,” said David Harris, Ben Weiner Director of Athletics Chair at Tulane. “Their stories exemplify the true spirit of the Wilma Rudolph Award and reflect the strength of our Tulane student-athletes both on and off the field. Their journeys inspire us all to overcome adversity and continue striving for excellence.” The pair will be honored alongside other recipients at the N4A Convention on June 8.
