Freshman Eliza Lennox led Tulane’s swimming team on March 12 with two individual top-10 finishes during the first day of the National Invitational Championships at the FAST Facility in Ocala, Florida. The team ranked 14th out of 46 teams, earning 73 points after eight events.
Lennox placed third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.81 seconds and finished seventh in the 50-yard butterfly, clocking in at 24.18 seconds. These performances contributed significantly to Tulane’s overall standing after day one.
Other notable results included Lise Coetzee finishing as Tulane’s top swimmer in the 500-yard freestyle, placing 13th with a time of 4:48.15. The relay teams also competed, with Marin Shimkus, Ebba Holgersson, Varvara Gkiouzepa Petropoulou, and Phoebe Johnson taking 26th place in the 400 free relay. The team of Lennox, Nicole Fant, Shimkus, and Danielle Barberie finished 30th in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:35.74.
Nicole Fant was Tulane’s fastest swimmer in the 50 backstroke (26.12), while Gwen Shahboz led in the 200 individual medley (2:04.60). Holgersson posted the team’s best result in the 50 breaststroke (29.62), and Mary Kate Kupsky was top finisher for Tulane in the time trials for the 200 IM (2:08.88).
The competition continues Friday, March 13, with preliminaries for several events starting at 8:30 a.m., followed by finals at 5 p.m., including relays and individual races.
