During the initial quarter of 2026, Ferncrest Manor Living Center was the largest nursing home in Orleans County, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reports.
Records indicate the facility offered 200 beds, exceeding the parish average by 65 beds as of Q1 2026. On average, 128.7 residents received care there throughout the quarter.
The CMS assigned Ferncrest Manor Living Center a 1 out of 5 overall rating, trailing Louisiana’s statewide nursing home average of 2.5.
In the same period, Chateau DE Notre Dame Community Care Center was ranked second largest in Orleans County, providing 171 beds, while Lafon Nursing Facility of the Holy Family had the third most capacity with 155 beds.
By the end of the first quarter of 2026, Ferncrest Manor Living Center had incurred three fines totaling $402,870 and was subject to four penalties.
Altogether, four for-profit nursing homes operated in Orleans County, Louisiana.
U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the older adult population across the nation continues to rise, while the number of children steadily declines. From 2020 to 2024, Americans ages 65 and older grew by 13%, while those under 18 declined by 1.7%. The country’s older adult population has increased significantly since 1920, climbing from 4.9 million to more than 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 report found that nearly half of people in this age group—about 28 million—are likely to require long-term care or support at some point. The same study estimates that more than one-third will eventually need care in a nursing home.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
