Fleur Sprengers was named the Southland Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, according to an announcement by the conference office on Mar. 31.

Sprengers, a sophomore, had an undefeated week in both singles and doubles matches, which led to her receiving this recognition. Her season record now stands at 22-4 overall, including a 13-1 mark in singles play.

Her week began with two victories against Southeastern that contributed to a narrow 4-3 win for the Privateers over the Lady Lions. In doubles play, Sprengers partnered with Danique Vermue to secure a 7-5 win against Bente Bierma and Paige Duncan from Southeastern. In singles competition, she defeated Panatchakorn Sunsara with scores of 6-2 and 6-1. This marked her thirteenth set win this year without conceding more than two games in any set.

Sprengers continued her strong performance against McNeese, which entered the match with a record of 17-1. She and Vermue took an early lead in doubles before winning their match against Stella Rundova and Elena Morales by a score of 6-3. In singles action, Sprengers faced Salome Fluri—the defending Southland Player and Freshman of the Year—and won after breaking Fluri’s serve four times for a final scoreline of 6-4, 6-3. The victory gave Fluri only her third singles loss this season.

This award makes Sprengers the first women’s player from New Orleans Privateers to earn the conference’s weekly honor this season; Jacob Rouleau-Mailly previously received it on the men’s side.
