Congressman Troy A. Carter, representing Louisiana’s 2nd district since 2021, recently expressed his disapproval of a legislative bill in a series of tweets on July 1, 2025. Carter criticized the GOP Senate for their handling of the bill, which he believes will negatively impact everyday Americans, particularly those in Louisiana.
In his first tweet at 18:40 UTC, Carter stated that “The GOP Senate is celebrating like they just won the Super Bowl —but what they’ve really done is take a bad bill and make it even worse.” He referred to the legislation as the “Big Beautiful Bill,” claiming it contains provisions harmful to citizens.
Later that day at 20:44 UTC, Carter highlighted a specific provision within the bill, noting its limited benefits. He tweeted, “You can’t make this stuff up: A $50,000 tax break for tarpon fishermen—only 160 people in ALASKA would benefit.” He contrasted this with the lack of support for working families and vulnerable groups.
At 21:45 UTC, Carter continued his critique by addressing disparities in tax relief measures. He tweeted about the temporary nature of tax relief for tipped workers compared to permanent breaks for billionaires. “Tax relief for tipped workers? Just 4 years. Tax breaks for billionaires? FOREVER.” He emphasized what he perceives as inequity and cruelty in policy decisions while Medicaid funding faces cuts.
Troy Carter has been an active member of Congress since succeeding Cedric Richmond in 2021. His political career includes service in both the Louisiana House of Representatives and Senate. Born and residing in New Orleans, Carter graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana with a BA in 1986.
