The Governmental Affairs Committee in New Orleans met on April 16 to consider a range of board appointments and discuss changes to the city’s temporary alcoholic beverage outlet permit regulations.
The committee’s actions are important as they shape both the leadership of several city boards and commissions, as well as the rules governing temporary alcohol permits for businesses. These decisions can impact how local government functions and how events or businesses operate within city limits.
During the meeting, the committee favorably recommended Sandra Lombana Lindquist, Brittany Major, and Penny Francis for positions on the Audubon Commission. Tonya Boyd Cannon was recommended for appointment to the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission. For the Finance Authority of New Orleans, Lamare Gardere, Kevin Wynne, and John Milazzo were also put forward for approval by the full City Council. Appointees Ceeon Quiett Smith, Nick Harris, Voris Vigee, and Cherrell Simms Taplin were recommended for roles on the Ethics Review Board.
Other recommendations included Sevetri Wilson Taylor to join the Downtown Development District Board and Ronald P. McClain to remain with the Sandy Krasnoff New Orleans Criminal Justice Council. The Honorable Bernette Johnson (Ret.) was also favorably recommended for a position with the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority.
The committee then discussed Ordinance No. 35,420 regarding temporary alcoholic beverage outlet permits. The ordinance updates regulations by clarifying application requirements—such as necessary state permits—and sets a limit of one non-renewable permit per property per year lasting up to 60 days. Applicants must comply with zoning laws without recent violations; applications can be denied due to health or safety concerns but denials must be provided in writing with an option to appeal to the Chief Administrative Officer.
These developments indicate ongoing efforts by city officials to streamline administrative processes while maintaining oversight over public safety issues related to temporary alcohol sales.
