Tulane University athletes earned two medals on May 15 during the second day of the American Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Norma Knobel Hunt Stadium in Denton, Texas. Silas Kiptanui took gold and Petra Dos Santos won bronze in the 3,000-meter steeplechase events, while several other team members scored points for the Green Wave.
The results are significant for Tulane’s track and field program as they reflect continued success at a major collegiate competition. Kiptanui repeated as champion in his event with a time of 8:57.46, securing back-to-back gold medals. Dos Santos finished third in her race with a time of 10:34.42, which also became the sixth-best mark in program history.
Allison Hall contributed four points by finishing fifth in the women’s steeplechase with a time of 10:45.14. Other notable performances included Brianna Brand placing seventh in the long jump (5.95 meters) and Presley Wolfe earning eighth place in pole vault (3.89 meters). In the heptathlon, Sofie Groeninger placed sixth overall after competing across seven events over two days and collecting a total of 5,127 points.
Groeninger also achieved a personal best throw of 14.07 meters to finish tenth in women’s shot put immediately after completing her heptathlon events. On the track preliminaries, Jasper Newton qualified for tomorrow’s final by placing sixth in the women’s 800-meter race with a time of 2:12.37.
After two days of competition, Tulane is ranked fifth among women’s teams with thirty points and sixth among men’s teams with twenty points overall.
The championships conclude tomorrow when Tulane athletes will compete further on both track and field events including relays and distance races.
