Tulane University freshman Mecailin Marshall has been named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week for women’s basketball, following her performance in games played from February 9 to 15. This marks Marshall’s third time receiving this honor during the current season and is the fifth time a Tulane player has earned the award this year.

Marshall, who is from Lubbock, Texas, averaged 19.5 points per game over two contests last week. Her scoring average was tied for fifth among all players in the conference during that period. On Tuesday against East Carolina, she scored a career-high 34 points, which is the highest single-game total by a Tulane freshman since at least 1999 and also stands as the most points scored by any Green Wave player coming off the bench this century. Nationally, her 34-point effort ranks as the sixth highest in a game by a freshman this season and is also the top mark among American Conference freshmen.

During that game against East Carolina, Marshall made more than half of Tulane’s field goals with 11 out of the team’s total of 20. She also hit four three-pointers and converted eight out of nine free throws.

For the week, Marshall was successful on 10 out of her 11 free throw attempts for a rate of 90.9 percent—the best in the conference among players with at least ten attempts. Her overall shooting percentages were 42.9 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Tulane holds an overall record of 8-16 and is currently 3-9 in league play. The team will remain on the road for two consecutive games against Memphis starting Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., followed by a rematch Thursday night in New Orleans at 6:30 p.m. The first meeting serves as a make-up for a previously postponed contest from January.

Fans can watch both games on ESPN+ or listen via WRBH 88.3 FM and through streaming on The Varsity Network App.

Ashley Langford, Head Coach at Tulane Green Wave Women’s Basketball, said: “This is Marshall’s third American Freshman of the Week honor this season and her first since December 1.”

Marshall commented: “Her scoring clip tied for fifth in the conference for the week.”

A spokesperson added: “Her 34 points are the sixth most in a game by a freshman across the nation this season, and it’s the highest output by an American Conference freshman.”

The Green Wave will continue their campaign with upcoming matchups as they seek to improve their standing within conference play.
