The New Orleans Department of Health and Human Services announced on April 27 the return of direct services to the Arthur Monday Jr. Multi-Service Center, expanding access to essential nutrition and health services in the Algiers community.

This expansion is intended to improve health outcomes for local families by making support available closer to home. Weekly services now offered at the center, located at 1111 Newton Street, include Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program support, Medicaid enrollment assistance, SNAP application help on the first Wednesday of each month, and other family-focused resources.

Meshawn Siddiq, Director for Family Health and Well-being, said: “Not only are we excited to bring these services to the Westbank, but the community is also excited based on the demand we have seen already at the location. The expansion of services at this center is essential to improving health outcomes and ensuring families receive the support they need close to home.”

Starting May 13, New Orleans Health Care for the Homeless will provide weekly medical and behavioral health care regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. As a Federally Qualified Health Center provider, these offerings are designed for broad accessibility.

Jeanie Donovan, Director for Public Health and Policy said: “Often it is not an eligibility issue that prevents people from enrolling in SNAP or Medicaid, but rather administrative barriers that keep those in need from accessing these critical programs. Providing application assistance is one tactic to reduce food insecurity and improve access to healthcare in New Orleans.”

The department has partnered with VIA Link’s 2-1-1 service so residents can connect with resources any time throughout the year. A public education campaign will inform residents about available programs.
