New Orleans falls to Lamar after strong third quarter from Cardinals

The New Orleans Privateers women’s basketball team lost to the Lamar Cardinals 84-54 on Saturday at Neches Arena in Beaumont, Texas. The Privateers trailed by just six points at halftime, but Lamar pulled away with a strong third quarter.

During the second quarter, New Orleans made eight of their 13 field goals and kept pace with Lamar. After one period, the Cardinals led 16-11. A layup by Hailee Brennen brought the Privateers within one point late in the first half, but Lamar responded with a 5-0 run to enter halftime ahead by six.

Lamar continued their momentum after the break, outscoring New Orleans 27-13 in the third quarter. Mikayla Johnson scored a layup for New Orleans to start the half, but Lamar answered by scoring 19 of the next 21 points.

Six different players from Lamar reached double figures in scoring, though none had more than 13 points. Solenne Olenga and Alexis Parker both recorded double-doubles for Lamar. Jacei Denley contributed with 11 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.

For New Orleans, Jayla Owen became the team’s eleventh player this season to score in double digits during a game.

Lauren Banks led New Orleans with 11 points and was perfect from the free throw line (6-for-6). Shanihya Brown tallied five assists and four steals. Hailee Brennen achieved a career-high five blocks. Mikayla Johnson and Sharon Smith each added nine points.

The Privateers will return home for Senior Night against Southeastern on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
