As Daylight Saving Time approaches on Sunday, March 8, 2026, the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) is urging residents to use the time change as a reminder to check their home smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. The department recommends testing all alarms and replacing the 9-volt backup batteries in hard-wired units.
The NOFD is also offering free 10-year lithium battery smoke alarms for those in need. Residents can request this service by calling 504-658-4714 or by submitting an online request at www.nola.gov/free-smoke-alarm and clicking “Request a Smoke Alarm.”
“Enjoy a safe spring—remember to check your alarms when you change your clocks,” the department stated.
This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts by city services to improve public safety and provide resources to local residents. Information about other non-emergency services is available through NOLA 311, which serves as the primary source of local government information for New Orleans.
