The New Orleans Privateers lost a close game to #10 Southern Miss by a score of 3-2 on Apr. 7 at Pete Taylor Park at Hill Denson Field.
The matchup was tightly contested, with the Privateers taking an early lead in the first inning. Evan Rogers delivered a two-out, two-strike single that brought home Dylan Biddick and Kruise Newman for the game’s opening runs. Despite loading the bases later in the inning, New Orleans was unable to add more runs as JW Armistead struck out a batter to end the threat.
Bryson Goff pitched 5.2 innings for New Orleans, throwing 60 strikes out of his 99 pitches. Southern Miss responded with a run in the second inning after Drey Barrett singled to drive in Ben Higdon. The Golden Eagles tied the game in the sixth when Barrett hit an RBI double with two outs.
Both teams remained locked until the bottom of the ninth inning when Matthew Russo hit a walk-off single through the right side, securing victory for Southern Miss. Colby Allen pitched three scoreless innings for Southern Miss and earned his third win of the season.
Barrett led Southern Miss offensively with three hits while Russo and Seth Smith each added two hits apiece. The Golden Eagles’ pitchers combined for twelve strikeouts over nine innings.
For New Orleans, Rogers went three-for-five at bat and Dathan Cummings collected two hits on the night. The team drew nine walks overall, with Biddick, Eli Tidwell, and Owen Smith accounting for seven of them.
Looking ahead, New Orleans will travel to Illinois to begin their next series on Friday evening.
