The New Orleans Privateers men’s tennis team lost 4-1 to the North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Thursday, March 12, at the Privateer Tennis Center. The match saw both teams competing closely, but North Dakota secured the win after a series of tightly contested singles and doubles matches.
This result is significant for the Privateers as it reflects their ongoing efforts against strong non-conference opponents. The match provided valuable experience for the team as they prepare for upcoming contests.
In doubles play, Carlos Melgosa and Beltran Fernandez gave New Orleans an early boost with a 6-3 victory. However, North Dakota quickly responded by winning the other two doubles matches with identical 6-4 scores, clinching the doubles point almost simultaneously on courts two and three.
Melgosa continued his strong performance in singles, winning his match convincingly 6-3, 6-2. Despite this success, North Dakota captured the next three singles points. Kotaro Matsumura won a key deuce point to avoid a first set tiebreak and went on to take his match 7-5, 6-2. Darrsh Suresh Kumar overcame an initial set loss to defeat his opponent 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. The final point was decided in a second-set tiebreak where Walker Valentine edged out Peter Kieslinger with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Looking ahead, the Privateers are scheduled to face Omaha on Saturday at 11 a.m., aiming to rebound from this defeat and build momentum for future matches.
