The New Orleans Privateers men’s tennis team secured a 7-0 victory over the Copiah-Lincoln Wolves on Sunday at the Privateer Tennis Center. The win marks another sweep for the Privateers as they completed their first week of competition.
Carlos Melgosa and Gonzalo Cotter started strong in doubles, winning their match without dropping a game. Jacob Rouleau-Mailly and Marius Gyllerup followed with a 6-2 doubles win. The Wolves claimed one doubles match at flight one, overcoming two break points to win 6-3.
In singles play, Cotter and Gyllerup each recorded 6-0, 6-0 victories. Evgenios Vasilakis finished his match by winning eight consecutive games, taking the second set 6-0 after securing a late service break. Rouleau-Mailly won his singles contest 6-2, 6-0. Beltran Fernandez posted a straight sets win at flight two with scores of 6-3, 6-3.
Melgosa completed the sweep by defeating Bucek 6-2, 6-4 after both players exchanged early service breaks in the second set.
“They played well today and got the job done,” said Coach Burzis Kanga. “I think now the schedule gets a little stronger but overall I’m pleased with what we’ve done so far. We still have a young team but I’m proud of the way they have executed the game plan each match.”
The Privateers will travel to face Jackson State on Wednesday, Feb. 11.
