The New Orleans Privateers men’s and women’s tennis teams lost their matches against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on April 4. The women’s team was defeated 5-2, while the men’s team fell by a score of 6-1 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center in Edinburg, Texas.

The results mark a setback for both teams as they continue their season. For the women’s team, Fleur Sprengers and Kateryna Kalistratova secured the only two points. Sprengers rallied after dropping her first set to Barbara Martinez, winning the second set before Martinez retired in the third. This victory improved Sprengers’ season record to 14-1. Kalistratova also earned a win by defeating Yaiza Vaquez in straight sets, including a lengthy tiebreak that ended 14-12.

UTRGV’s women’s squad won all three doubles matches and claimed victories in both singles contests that went to three sets. Rhea Makesar won her match at flight five with scores of 6-1, 3-6, and 6-3, while Valentina Urraco triumphed at flight six with scores of 6-1, 4-6, and 6-3.

On the men’s side, Jerall Yasin delivered New Orleans’ only point by defeating Will Roberts in straight sets. However, UTRGV swept all doubles matches and took four out of five singles contests in straight sets as well. Santiago Serrano and Ivo Isqueiro clinched the doubles point for UTRGV with their win at flight two. Isqueiro later secured another point by winning his singles match at flight two.

Both Privateers teams are scheduled to play next against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Monday.

The outcome highlights ongoing challenges for both squads as they look ahead to future conference matchups.
