The New Orleans Privateers men’s and women’s tennis teams will travel to South Texas for matches against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Monday, also at 2 p.m., according to an April 3 announcement.

These upcoming contests are significant as both teams look to improve their records in conference play. The men’s team is aiming to end a six-match losing streak that began after their last win over Southern on March 10. They recently suffered two losses, each by a score of 5-2, against Lamar and UIW.

Carlos Melgosa leads the men’s team with eleven singles victories this season, having won five of his last seven matches. He has also secured eight doubles wins so far. Other key contributors include Beltran Fernandez with nine singles wins, Gonzalo Cotter with eight, and Jacob Rouleau-Mailly with seven. The team has won just over half of its singles matches this year. Last season, the Privateers lost to UTRGV in regular season play but defeated them during the Southland Tournament. Recent matchups against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi have been close, with six out of eight meetings decided by a narrow 4-3 margin.

On the women’s side, the Privateers split their recent conference matches—winning 4-3 over Southeastern before falling 5-2 to McNeese State University, which currently leads the Southland Conference standings. Fleur Sprengers was named Southland Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after posting a perfect record last week that included a win over reigning Conference Player of the Year Salome Fluri; Sprengers now holds a remarkable 13-1 singles record this season.

Senior Kateryna Kalistratova continues her strong performance by winning her latest match in three sets and maintaining an eleven-win record overall for singles this year while extending her streak in three-set matches dating back to last year. The doubles pairing of Sprengers and Danique Vermue is also performing well at flight one with nine wins from twelve outings so far.

The women’s team is seeking its first victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi since 2021 after falling short in previous encounters—including last year’s inaugural meeting versus UTRGV where they lost by a scoreline of 5-2.
