New Orleans Privateers women’s basketball prepares for road games against UIW and HCU

The New Orleans Privateers women’s basketball team is set to travel to Texas for two upcoming games, facing UIW on Thursday and HCU on Saturday.

In their most recent game, the Privateers were defeated at home by UTRGV with a score of 71-53. Shanihya Brown led the team in scoring with 18 points, while Sharon Smith contributed 10 points.

New Orleans has been strong in rebounding during conference play. The team leads the Southland Conference in offensive rebounds per game with an average of 13.5 and ranks fourth in total rebounds at 38.5 per game. Jayla Kimbrough averages 6.0 rebounds per game in conference play, and Lauren Banks follows with 5.5 rebounds.

Brown stands out as the only player in the Southland Conference ranked within the top five for both assists and steals. She is currently third in each category and leads her team in scoring, averaging 11.2 points per game.

Defensively, New Orleans forces an average of 17.8 turnovers per game, which is the fourth highest mark in the conference behind McNeese, Nicholls, and Lamar. The Privateers are also fourth in blocked shots since conference play began.

UIW enters Thursday’s matchup sixth in the conference standings with an 8-7 record but has lost four consecutive games since their last win on January 24 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Brynn Lusby is one of three qualified players in the Southland shooting over 50 percent from the field this season.

HCU currently sits just outside of tournament qualification at 4-11 and trails eighth-place Nicholls by three games heading into Thursday’s action. The Huskies rank sixth in the conference for steals with a total of 196 this season, and Grace Booth is tied for fifth among league rebounders at 6.6 boards per game.
