Nicholls defeats New Orleans Privateers women’s basketball team in conference matchup

The Nicholls Colonels defeated the New Orleans Privateers women’s basketball team 67-49 on Thursday night at Stopher Gym in Thibodaux, Louisiana, completing a season sweep. The game saw the Colonels take an early lead of 15-7 before the Privateers responded with seven straight points to narrow the gap. At the end of the first quarter, Nicholls led 20-18.

Jayla Kimbrough tied the score for New Orleans early in the second quarter with two free throws, but Nicholls responded with an 11-2 run involving five different players, establishing a 29-20 advantage. By halftime, Nicholls held a 35-24 lead and had outrebounded New Orleans 26-17 while holding them to just over 28 percent shooting from the field.

In the third quarter, Nicholls extended their lead with a 9-3 run coming out of halftime and were up by 17 points at the media timeout. Overall, they collected 16 second-chance points and finished with a significant rebounding edge of 49-37.

Marie Kenembeni led all scorers with 20 points for Nicholls. Emani Burks added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

For New Orleans, Brialle Washington was top scorer with 13 points. Jayla Kimbrough and Sharon Smith each contributed eight points. Shanihya Brown recorded five points along with four rebounds and six assists.

Looking ahead, New Orleans will travel to Lake Charles for their next game against McNeese. The tipoff has been moved to noon due to an approaching winter storm.
