The New Orleans Police Department announced on April 8 the arrest of Terrence Leavell, age 48, in connection with a homicide that took place at North Claiborne Avenue and Desire Street in the Fifth District on April 7.

Police say officers responded to reports of an auto accident and shots fired around 5:00 p.m. Upon arrival, they found a 41-year-old Hispanic male inside one of the vehicles involved, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Emergency Medical Services transported the victim to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

While investigating at the scene, officers detained Leavell. Detectives later identified him as the perpetrator. Leavell was arrested without incident and booked on charges including manslaughter, possession of a firearm or carrying a concealed weapon by a person convicted of certain felonies, and illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities.

The investigation is ongoing. The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identity and official cause of death after completing an autopsy and notifying family members.
