The New Orleans Privateers baseball team secured a 14-5 win over the Southern Jaguars on Wednesday at Lee Hines Field in Baton Rouge. This marks the first Division I victory for Head Coach Andrew Gipson.
New Orleans established an early lead with a four-run second inning, taking advantage of three walks and a hit by pitch. Collin Loupe and Evan Rogers each drew bases-loaded walks to bring in two runs. Miles Curley followed with a single through the left side, driving in two more runs and contributing to his four-RBI performance for the night.
The Privateers continued their offensive push in the following innings. Karson Evans hit a two-run home run in the third, while Kruise Newman added his first home run as a Privateer during a three-run fourth inning. By the end of the fourth, New Orleans led 9-2.
Southern narrowed the gap slightly with two runs in the seventh inning, but New Orleans responded with five runs in the eighth. Owen Smith capped off that frame with a three-run homer to extend the lead into double digits.
Nine pitchers appeared for New Orleans, each throwing one inning. Rex Henderson closed out the game by inducing a ground ball to Loupe. Jack Garvey, Gus Rogers, Brice Deaton, and Brock Hill all contributed scoreless innings from the mound.
Curley reached base four times on two hits and two walks while driving in four runs. Dylan Biddick recorded three hits including a double. Evans finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs, two walks, and scored twice. As a team, New Orleans drew 17 walks during the game.
The Privateers will next play Alabama A&M on Friday at 4 p.m., opening their participation in the Maestri Classic.
“This is my first Division I win as head coach,” said Andrew Gipson after Wednesday’s game.
