Tulane University’s track and field program reported on Apr. 17 that Cara Salsberry broke her own school record in the hammer throw during Friday’s competitions, as part of a busy weekend for the Green Wave at both the Tom Tellez Alumni Invitational in Houston and the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California.
The announcement highlights continued strong performances from Tulane athletes across multiple events. Salsberry threw 59.54 meters to win the hammer throw event, surpassing her previous program mark of 59.22 meters set last week in College Station, Texas. Her new distance ranks 53rd nationally among all Division I competitors. She also finished second in discus with a throw of 50.03 meters, now standing as the second-best mark in Tulane history behind Jelena Jurlina’s record from May 2004.
Other notable results included Brianna Brand placing ninth and Sofie Groeninger tenth in women’s long jump, Presley Wolfe finishing sixth in women’s pole vault, and Aiden Yang taking thirteenth place in men’s hammer throw. On the track, Marissa Gordon placed sixth with a time of 56.33 seconds in the women’s 400-meter race while Alexander Montoro finished eighteenth for men with a time of 51.52 seconds.
At the Bryan Clay Invitational, Morgan Matthews ran a time of 17:25.41 to finish fiftieth in the women’s open B section of the five-thousand-meter race; Elise Brown was sixty-seventh at that distance as well. Gilbert Rono took third place among men with his run of 14:16.26 over five thousand meters.
Additional performances included Samuel Cohen (fourth) and Jalen St. Fort (twenty-third) entering Tulane’s all-time top ten list for men’s eight-hundred-meter times; Jasper Newton achieved tenth best ever for women at that distance with her tenth-place finish (2:09.43). Dana Rojas Vazquez and Alex Sharp both delivered times ranking them sixth and seventh respectively on Tulane’s historical list for women’s five-thousand-meters.
Competition is scheduled to conclude Saturday at both venues with further sprints, field events, and distance races.
