Tulane athletes competed on April 10 during the second day of the 44 Farms Team Invitational at E.B. Cushing Stadium in College Station, Texas, where Cara Salsberry set a new program record in the hammer throw and Maria Alduan won the women’s 800 meters.
The event was affected by a weather delay of about an hour and a half due to lightning, but all scheduled competitions were completed. The meet showcased several strong performances from Tulane athletes despite the schedule changes.
In combined events, Sofie Groeninger moved up to eighth place overall after competing in the long jump, javelin, and 800 meters on Friday. Her total of 5,264 points ties her for fourth best in Tulane history with Jada Johnson.
Field events saw Salsberry open with a mark of 59.22 meters in the hammer throw to break Jacqueline Esmay’s previous school record set in May 2018. Salsberry also placed tenth in discus with a throw of 46.66 meters. Other notable field results included Brianna Brand’s season-best long jump and Presley Wolfe tying for eighth place in pole vault invite.
On the track, Alduan led Tulane by winning the women’s 800 meters with a time of 2:15.21. Eliza Brand finished sixth in the women’s 1,500 meters while Nahema Dumonteil Cabanas narrowly missed out on a top-10 finish in the women’s 400-meter hurdles.
The invitational is scheduled to conclude Saturday with additional field and track events featuring both men’s and women’s teams from Tulane.
