Michael Naguib, the Ken & Ruth Arnold Early Career Professor in Science and Engineering at the School of Science and Engineering, has been named to the annual list of Highly Cited Researchers for 2022 by Clarivate, a British-based analytics company and the producer for Web of Science.

This is the third year Naguib has been named to the list; he was also named to it in 2018 and 2021.

Naguib is an assistant professor and works in the field of novel energy materials. His work has included a new family of two-dimensional materials and advanced supercapacitors. He has been recognized multiple times for his innovations in two-dimensional material and electrochemical energy storage, including by Tulane University, which honored him in 2021 with a Rising Star Award at the inaugural Research, Scholarship and Artistic Achievement Awards. Next month Naguib will also be honored with the 2022 InfoMat Junior Researcher Award, an award for young researchers in fields such as energy storage and conversion, 2D materials and devices, biosensors, flexible electronics and others. The award will be presented on Dec. 1 at the Materials Research Society meeting in Boston.

The highly anticipated annual list identifies researchers who demonstrated significant influence in their chosen field or fields through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade. Their names are drawn from the publications that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index.

The methodology that determines the “who’s who” of influential researchers draws on the data and analysis performed by bibliometric experts and data scientists at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate. It also uses the tallies to identify the countries and research institutions where these citation elite are based.

“We are excited that the work of our faculty member and colleague Michael Naguib has been recognized in this list,” said School of Science and Engineering Dean Kimberly L. Foster. “His status as a Highly Cited Researcher shows that his investigations are critical to providing sustainable energy solutions for the future — and that Tulane is an institution that values developing research careers. We are very proud of Michael and his important work.”

This year’s Highly Cited Researcher designations include 6,938 researchers worldwide who demonstrated significant influence in science and social science. According to Clarivate, “of the world’s population of scientists and social scientists, Highly Cited Researchers number only 1 in 1,000.”
