On Friday, February 2, 2024, at 1:11 a.m., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was dispatched to a reported working fire in the 2000 block of Laharpe St. Arriving at 1:16 a.m., firefighters were confronted with a large, two-story, wood-framed, vacant commercial structure at, 2031 Laharpe St., with flames already emanating from the roof. After beginning an initial attack on the structure and assessing the potential exposure to occupied homes in this densely populated neighborhood, a second alarm was requested at 1:21 a.m. Firefighters were forced to conduct an exterior attack on structure, that had been gutted by its current owner in preparation for renovations. During fire suppression operations the building eventually succumbed to the collapse of its roof and exterior walls. A third alarm was requested at 1:33 a.m., as NOFD Fire Operations personnel worked to bring this fire under control.

Nineteen NOFD apparatuses and response vehicles, supported by fifty-one personnel were used to bring this incident under control. The building’s owners and several residents of the neighborhood noted that they had often complained about vagrants frequenting the structure. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported and an investigator was called to the scene to help determine what may have caused this fire. The New Orleans Police Department and Entergy were on scene to assist in the mitigation of this incident.
