On Thursday, February 1, 2024, at 8:02 a.m., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was dispatched to a call of dwelling on fire in the 2600 block of Ursulines Ave. The first NOFD unit arrived at 2635-37 Ursulines Ave at 8:07 a.m., finding an occupied two-unit dwelling with heavy smoke exiting the rear-right side of the residence. Upon arrival firefighters were advised that the resident of the basement unit and his dog had escaped safely and that the three residents of the of the upper unit had escaped but their three small dogs were still inside. A contingent of NOFD Fire Operations personnel aggressively worked to extinguish the fire, others performed search and rescue efforts to locate the dogs. Unfortunately, all three dogs were found unresponsive. Resuscitation efforts were conducted on all three dogs but were unsuccessful.

Eight NOFD units, supported by twenty-five NOFD Fire Operations personnel were used to bring this incident under control at 8:25 a.m. A total of three adults and one child were displaced by this incident and there were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
