NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans continues to spotlight successful achievements to celebrate February 2024 Black History Month.
The sacrifices, on-field successes and historic achievements of St. Augustine High School Football continues to serve as an inspirational playbook. Through the application of Law, coupled with Divine Hope and Faith and sports excellence, it has produced St. Augustine Football teams that scored a championship legacy to last lifetimes.
Such is the exploration of exemplary achievements of Writer/Director Oyd Craddock’s award-winning film, narrated by the Acclaimed Actor Wendell Pierce, telling the story of the trailblazing achievements of St. Augustine High School Football in the Film “Before The West Coast.”
“Before the West Coast” is a storyline of the all-Black St. Augustine High School breaking through racial barriers and integrating Louisiana’s all-white athletic league following a 1967 Federal Court order. The film chronicles the school’s response to adversity and the innovative leadership of Head Football Coach Otis Washington. St. Augustine’s perseverance in public competition with other Catholic schools was one of the change-agents that helped New Orleans win the game over the era of segregation.
“Before The West Coast” will be shown at the Broad Theater Sunday, Feb. 25 at 4:30 p.m. as part of a notable series of Black History Month events.
