This week in Nola history.

Died August 23, 2012; Known for NFL career

Steve Van Buren died on August 23, 2012. He was raised in New Orleans and attended Warren Easton High School. Van Buren played college football at LSU before joining the Philadelphia Eagles in 1944. He played halfback for eight seasons. He led the NFL in rushing yards four times and was the league’s top scorer twice. Van Buren helped the Eagles win NFL championships in 1948 and 1949. He was selected to five Pro Bowls and earned NFL MVP honors twice. Van Buren retired in 1951 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1965. His time in New Orleans shaped his early life and career. His achievements remain part of the city’s sports history.
