The Nicholls Colonels defeated the New Orleans Privateers 79-64 on Saturday at Lakefront Arena, pulling away in the fourth quarter after a closely contested game.

Nicholls entered the final period with a narrow one-point lead and then outscored New Orleans 17-6 in the first six minutes of the quarter. The Colonels capitalized at the free throw line during that stretch, making nine points from free throws.

Earlier in the game, New Orleans trailed for most of the first half but narrowed the gap to just two points midway through the second quarter following a 7-0 run. Jayla Kimbrough’s pull-up jumper brought the Privateers within one point late in the half, though Nicholls maintained their advantage to lead 41-35 at halftime.

The Privateers managed to tie the score at 54-54 in the third quarter when Jayla Owen hit two free throws with just over three minutes remaining. However, both teams combined for only three more points before heading into the fourth quarter with Nicholls up by one.

Four Colonels scored in double figures, led by Anyra Wilson with 15 points. Tanita Swift and Sh’Diamond McKnight each contributed 13 points.

Lauren Banks was New Orleans’ top scorer with 15 points and seven rebounds. Kimbrough added 14 points and eight rebounds while Brialle Washington finished with 13 points.

The Privateers will next play Lamar on Thursday, January 15 at Lakefront Arena.
