Congressman Troy A. Carter, representing Louisiana’s 2nd district, has recently expressed his opposition to a legislative bill known as the “#BigUglyBill.” Through a series of tweets, he communicated his concerns and actions regarding this legislation and its potential impact on American citizens.
On July 3, 2025, Congressman Carter announced his decision to vote against the bill. He stated, “I voted NO on Trump’s #BigUglyBill. Let me be clear: this bill is not just ugly—it’s catastrophic and down right cruel.” He emphasized that with Republican majorities in both chambers passing the legislation, there would be “devastating consequences for Louisianians and Americans across the country.”
The following day, July 4, 2025, Congressman Carter invited constituents to a Town Hall meeting scheduled for Thursday, July 10. In his tweet he said “On Thursday 7/10, I’m hosting a Town Hall featuring @RepJeffries, @RepRobinKelly, @RepDWStweets, and @RepBarragan to talk about Trump’s attack on Americans Healthcare.” The event aims to address concerns following the passage of the “#BigUGLYBill,” which he described as making such discussions “more critical than ever.”
Later that same day on July 4th—America’s Independence Day—Carter reflected on the mixed emotions brought by celebrating national freedom while dealing with recent legislative developments. He shared his sentiments in another tweet: “This #July4th is a day of mixed emotions as we celebrate our nation’s freedom while also grappling with the passage of a bill that will harm countless American families.” Despite these challenges, he expressed appreciation for “the neighbors who make our country.”
Troy Carter has been serving in Congress since replacing Cedric Richmond in 2021. His political career includes time in both the Louisiana House of Representatives and Senate. Born in New Orleans in 1963 and an alumnus of Xavier University of Louisiana with a BA earned in 1986.
