Tulane University reported on March 21 that its track and field team achieved 16 top-10 finishes during the final day of the Louisiana Classics at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex in Lafayette, Louisiana. The event marked the opening of Tulane’s outdoor season.
The results are significant as they highlight strong performances by both returning athletes and newcomers, setting a positive tone for the rest of the season.
Cara Salsberry won the hammer throw with a mark of 57.97 meters, placing her second in program history for that event. Salsberry had also entered Tulane’s all-time top ten in discus earlier in the competition. Nahema Dumonteil Cabanas claimed victory in the women’s 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.81, which ranks ninth all-time at Tulane. Dumonteil Cabanas also placed fourth in high jump with a personal best of 1.62 meters.
Other notable performances included Camille Cummings finishing sixth in pole vault (3.15 meters) and Sofie Groeninger taking sixth place in long jump (5.56 meters). On the track, Eliza Brand finished second in the women’s 1,500 meters (4:40.66), while Morgan Matthews was sixth (4:48.08). In men’s competition, Samuel Cohen and Paul James Pam ran personal bests to finish second and third respectively in the 1,500 meters, followed closely by Roman Schrader (fourth) and Jalen St. Fort (seventh).
Additional highlights included Marissa Gordon recording a personal best to finish seventh in the women’s 400 meters, Zaria Parker placing eighth in the women’s 100 meters, and Brand securing another top-10 finish by placing sixth in the women’s 800 meters.
Tulane also performed well in relay events: their women’s teams finished fourth in the 4×100 meter relay and sixth in the 4×400 meter relay.
Looking ahead, Tulane will compete next at the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State from March 26 to March 28.
