Tulane baseball secured a 7-6 victory over No. 12 Southern Miss on April 28, breaking an eight-game losing streak against the Golden Eagles at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. The Green Wave overcame a five-run deficit to win their first home game against Southern Miss since the 2017 season and their first overall win over the team since 2018.
The game was tied at six in the bottom of the eighth inning when Tanner Chun delivered a two-out single through the left side, allowing Johnny Elliott to score from second base and giving Tulane the lead. Sam Larson earned the win with one and one-third innings of scoreless relief, coming in during a crucial moment in the eighth inning with two runners on base.
Chun contributed with two hits, two runs batted in, and a run scored for Tulane. Matthias Haas had three hits including his second home run of the season, driving in three runs and scoring once himself. Trent Liolios also hit his second home run of the year to tie the game in the seventh inning.
Southern Miss began strong with early runs from Joey Urban’s home run and additional scores by Lawson Odom, Ty Long, Kyle Morrison, and Matthew Russo. However, Tulane responded with four runs in the third inning before adding solo homers from Haas and Liolios later in the contest.
With this result, Tulane improves its record to .500 on the season (23-23) while Southern Miss falls to 31-14. The Green Wave now prepare for an away series against Charlotte from May 1-3.
The victory marks only Tulane’s second one-run win this season as well as their second ranked triumph after defeating No.17 TCU earlier this year.
