Tulane baseball falls to Charlotte 8-2 in second game of series

The Tulane baseball team lost its second consecutive game to Charlotte by a score of 8-2 on Saturday evening, May 2, at Hayes Stadium in Charlotte.

The loss marks another setback for Tulane (23-25, 8-12 American) as the team continues its conference schedule. Jake Toporek started for Tulane and took the loss after giving up five runs in just under three innings. Blaise Wilcenski and Trey Cehajic also pitched in relief, with Cehajic making his first relief appearance of the season after starting eleven games this year.

Offensively, Tye Wood and Matthias Haas each collected two hits for Tulane. Haas drove in a run while James Agabedis also had an RBI. Trent Liolios scored a run after hitting a double, and both Nate Johnson and Johnny Elliott contributed hits as well. Tanner Chun walked twice and scored once.

Charlotte’s Eddie Copper earned the win with five innings pitched and six strikeouts. Chase Carson picked up his first save of the season by pitching four innings to close out the game.

Tulane scored first with a run in the third inning but gave up five runs to Charlotte in the bottom half of that frame, including a three-run home run from Alex DeMartino. The Green Wave loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth but could not capitalize further. The defeat drops Tulane’s all-time record against Charlotte to 34-29 and brings their road record this season to 7-17.

Next, Tulane will play the final game of its series against Charlotte on Sunday, May 3 at noon Central Time at Hayes Stadium.
