The Tulane baseball team lost 8-6 in extra innings to Creighton University on Friday night, March 13, at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. After falling behind by six runs in the first inning, Tulane rallied to tie the game in the ninth before ultimately losing in the twelfth inning.
The loss brings Tulane’s record to 9-9 and marks their first losing streak longer than two games this season. The game also featured a strong performance from Tulane’s bullpen, which held Creighton scoreless from the second through eleventh innings and recorded a total of 17 strikeouts—tied for seventh-most in a single game in school history.
Trey Cehajic started for Tulane but allowed six runs in less than an inning. Relief pitchers LuisPablo Navarro, Jacob Moore, Caden Tarango, Julius Ejike-Charles, Jude Abbadessa, Sam Larson, and Jake Toporek combined to keep Creighton off the scoreboard until the twelfth. Toporek was charged with the loss after giving up a two-run home run to Nate McHugh that put Creighton ahead for good.
Offensively, Tanner Chun led Tulane with three hits and two RBIs. Nolan Nawrocki hit his first home run of the season and drove in three runs. Jason Wachs extended his on-base streak to 44 games with a walk. Despite collecting ten hits and eight walks as a team, Tulane struggled with runners in scoring position, going just one-for-fourteen and leaving twelve runners stranded.
The extra-inning contest was Tulane’s first since playing ten innings against Charlotte at the end of last season. The twelve innings played were their most since a thirteen-inning game against Cal State Fullerton in February 2020.
Tulane will continue its series against Creighton on Saturday, March 14 at 2 p.m.
