The Tulane baseball team lost its conference opener to Memphis by a score of 7-6 on March 20 at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

This game marked the start of American Athletic Conference play for both teams. Tulane, now with an overall record of 11-12 and 0-1 in conference, saw its two-game winning streak come to an end. Memphis improved to 6-14 overall and picked up its first conference win.

Trey Cehajic took the loss for Tulane after allowing six runs, five earned, over five innings while striking out five batters. Jack Brafa and Sam Larson pitched in relief, with LuisPablo Navarro striking out the side in the ninth inning. Offensively, Jason Wachs led Tulane with three hits, three runs scored, and an RBI. Nate Johnson contributed two hits and three walks. Trent Liolios added two hits, an RBI, and two runs scored.

Memphis took an early lead with runs in each of the first two innings before Tulane tied it up in the second. The Tigers regained control with two more runs in the third inning and extended their advantage with solo home runs from Tyler Harrington and Cade Hitsion. Despite efforts from Brett Rowell and Hugh Pinkney to close the gap for Tulane, Memphis held on for the win.

Wachs extended his on-base streak to 49 games dating back to last season. The Green Wave’s pitching staff recorded double-digit strikeouts for the twelfth time this year. The team’s eleven hits were their second-highest total of the season.

Tulane will continue its series against Memphis on Saturday, March 21.
