The Tulane baseball team lost to South Florida 16-6 in the series opener on Friday, May 8, at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. The defeat marks the fifth consecutive loss for Tulane, bringing their record to 23-28 overall and 8-14 in American Athletic Conference play.
This result is significant as it continues a challenging stretch for Tulane late in the season and impacts their standing within the conference. The game featured multiple lead changes before South Florida pulled away with strong offensive performances.
Pitcher J.D. Rodriguez was charged with the loss after allowing six runs over four innings while striking out five batters. Blaise Wilcenski contributed two innings of relief, giving up an unearned run and recording three strikeouts. Tom Vincent allowed five runs during his time on the mound, while Michael Devenney gave up four runs (three earned) in just over an inning of work. Max Mazinter finished out the game for Tulane.
Offensively, Trent Liolios and Matthias Haas each had two hits for Tulane. Liolios drove in three runs with his third home run of the season, while Haas also homered and collected two RBIs. Jason Wachs added a hit, a run scored, and an RBI. Several other players reached base or contributed hits throughout the lineup.
South Florida’s Edwin Alicea earned his sixth win of the year by pitching four scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Nathan Earley led USF’s offense with a three-run home run to tie the game early and later drove in additional runs as part of a five-RBI performance.
Tulane initially took a three-run lead but saw South Florida respond with big innings throughout the middle and late stages of the contest. Defensive errors by Tulane contributed to several unearned runs as South Florida extended its advantage late in the game.
Looking ahead, Tulane will try to rebound when they face South Florida again on Saturday, May 9 at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
