The Tulane baseball team lost to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) 9-6 on March 27, after a late comeback attempt in the ninth inning at Young Memorial Field. Tulane now holds a record of 14 wins and 13 losses overall, with two wins and two losses in American Athletic Conference play.
The game saw Tulane trailing by nine runs going into the final inning. The team managed to score six runs in the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate before UAB closed out the win with a strikeout. Nate Johnson led off the rally with a single and later contributed a two-run double. Other key contributors included Evan Burg, Trent Liolios, James Agabedis, Hugh Pinkney, Kaikea Harrison, Tanner Chun, and Tye Wood.
Starting pitcher Trey Cehajic allowed eight runs over four and two-thirds innings for Tulane. Relief pitchers Jacob Moore and Caden Tarango followed before Michael Devenney pitched two-and-a-third scoreless innings. Devenney’s performance included escaping a bases-loaded situation in the seventh inning.
UAB took an early lead with four runs in the second inning and continued adding to their advantage throughout the game. Mason Steele earned his third win of the season for UAB by pitching seven innings while allowing only two hits.
Notable achievements from this game include Jason Wachs extending his on-base streak to 53 games—a career high—and Michael Devenney recording his longest outing so far this season. James Agabedis registered his third hit of the year as a pinch hitter for Tulane.
Tulane will look to even its series against UAB when they play again on Saturday afternoon.
