The Tulane baseball team lost a 10-0 game to Charlotte on Friday night, May 1, at Hayes Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. The game ended after seven innings due to the run rule.
This loss marks the first time this season that Tulane has been shut out and is also the program’s first run-shortened defeat of the campaign. The outcome affects Tulane’s overall record and their historical performance against Charlotte.
J.D. Rodriguez started for Tulane and allowed eight runs on ten hits over three innings with five strikeouts. All three inherited runners scored after Rodriguez left the mound. LuisPablo Navarro pitched a scoreless inning, while Michael Devenney gave up two runs in two innings with three strikeouts. Offensively, Tulane managed only three hits from James Agabedis, Nate Johnson, and Matthias Haas. Tanner Chun drew a walk and stole a base; Kaikea Harrison and Tye Wood also walked.
Charlotte pitcher Ryan Combs threw a complete-game shutout with nine strikeouts over seven innings to secure the win for his team. Dylan Koontz hit a three-run home run in the first inning for Charlotte, followed by additional runs in subsequent frames through singles and sacrifice plays by Adrian Jimenez, Cody Gunderson, Alec DeMartino, Cale Stricklin, and Koontz again.
The Green Wave now holds an all-time record of 34-28 against Charlotte following this result. The last time Tulane was shut out was against South Florida on March 28 of last year (3-0), and their previous run-shortened loss was also to Charlotte (12-1) on May 16 of last year.
Tulane will play the second game of its series against Charlotte on Saturday, May 2 at Hayes Stadium.
