The Tulane baseball team, currently holding a 14-12 overall record and a 2-1 mark in American Athletic Conference play, will travel to Birmingham, Alabama for a three-game series against UAB from March 27-29. The games will be held at Young Memorial Field with scheduled start times of 5 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
This series marks Tulane’s second conference matchup of the season as the team looks to extend its current three-game winning streak. The games are significant for both teams as they seek to improve their standings early in conference play.
Graduate student Trey Cehajic is set to start Friday’s game for Tulane, entering with a record of one win and one loss this season along with an earned run average (ERA) of 7.20 over six starts. Jack Frankel, a sophomore transfer from Liberty University who has posted strong performances so far this year including a complete game win over Harvard, will take the mound Saturday for his third weekend start with Tulane.
UAB brings a roster led by John Paul Head—who has already hit 13 home runs this season—and features several players contributing both offensively and defensively. Mason Steele is expected to pitch Friday’s opener for UAB; starting pitchers for Saturday and Sunday have not yet been announced by either team.
Historically, Tulane holds an all-time advantage over UAB with a record of 44 wins and 24 losses since their first meeting in 1996. Last year’s matchup saw Tulane win two out of three games against the Blazers in New Orleans; however, recent history shows that UAB took the last home series between these teams during the previous campaign.
Several Green Wave players have posted notable statistics leading up to this series: Jason Wachs continues his streak by reaching base safely in all games this season while Nate Johnson leads in RBIs when starting games. Pitchers like J.D Rodriguez and Jude Abbadessa have also made key contributions out of the bullpen during recent contests.
Following this road trip, Tulane will return home on March 31 to face Nicholls before resuming conference action at Wichita State early next month.
