The Tulane University women’s bowling team, ranked No. 17 nationally, finished the first day of the TNBA Open in fifth place with a 3-2 record. The event is hosted by The National Bowling Association and Jackson State at All Star Lanes in Baton Rouge.
Tulane started strong, winning its first three matches. Against Alabama State, the Green Wave secured a 959-840 victory with individual game scores of 175-170, 244-166, 181-167, 183-181, and 176-156.
In their next match against Southern University, Tulane narrowly won by a total score of 969-967. After taking the opening game 176-166, Tulane lost the following three but managed to clinch the match with a final game score of 257 to Southern’s 191.
Tulane then faced Jackson State and won another close contest by a margin of four pins (877-873). Game scores included wins of 170-154 and 170-149 for Tulane, while Jackson State took two games with scores of 201-163 and 190-184.
The competition intensified as Tulane met two other ranked teams. Against No. 14 Sam Houston, Tulane fell short with a total score of 1,043-916 despite starting with a win in the first game. The day’s final match saw Tulane lose to No. 23 Central Missouri by a score of 908-832.
At the end of five sets comprising five Baker matches each among eight teams, Tulane totaled 4,553 pins.
The tournament continues Saturday with five traditional matches that will complete qualifying before Sunday’s bracket rounds.
