Tulane University reported on May 1 that the opening day of the Alumni Muster at E.B. Cushing Stadium was shortened due to inclement weather, but athletes from Tulane still achieved strong results in both the men’s and women’s 5,000-meter races.

The changes to the schedule meant fewer events were completed, but Tulane’s runners performed well despite the conditions. The meet is important as it marks one of the final opportunities for athletes to compete before postseason events.

In the men’s race, Illia Kunin finished second with a time of 14:14.29. Gilbert Rono secured third place with a personal-best time of 14:27.36. Juan Giron also placed in the top ten by finishing seventh at 14:54.00, while Cooper Sorsen came in eleventh with a time of 15:29.47.

On the women’s side, Morgan Matthews led Tulane’s effort by finishing fourth in a field of five runners with a time of 17:28.71, and Elise Brown followed in fifth place at 17:50.16.

The Alumni Muster will conclude tomorrow with field events and rescheduled discus throws that were postponed because of weather disruptions on day one. Additionally, another group of Tulane athletes is set to compete in the LSU Invitational on Saturday as both meets wrap up Tulane’s outdoor regular season.
