Tulane completed its final event of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships First Round on May 30, as Cara Salsberry finished 35th in the women’s discus at the UK Outdoor Track and Field Complex in Lexington, Kentucky. This marked Tulane’s sixth event of the weekend, with Silas Kiptanui emerging as the only Green Wave athlete to advance to the national championships.
Salsberry was Tulane’s sole competitor on Saturday, recording a mark of 49.81 meters in the women’s discus to secure her 35th-place finish. Her performance concluded a weekend that saw multiple athletes compete across four days at the east regional meet.
On day one, Rogerio Amaral and Tommy Rice represented Tulane in the men’s 10,000 meters. Amaral placed 30th with a time of 29:58.53, while Rice finished 42nd at 30:40.17. Salsberry also competed in two throwing events during the meet; she placed 22nd in Thursday’s women’s hammer throw by achieving a distance of 59.87 meters and surpassing her own program record.
Blezzin Kimutai participated in Thursday night’s women’s 10,000 meters and secured a 21st-place finish with a time of 34:09.60. On Friday, Silas Kiptanui made history by winning his heat in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:18.09—breaking his own records for both Tulane and The American Conference while also setting a new facility record at Lexington.
Kiptanui is scheduled to compete again at nationals from June 10 to June 13 at Eugene, Oregon, where he will race once more in pursuit of an individual national title.
